Since 1992, MI-KA Building Services has grown from a small, family-run team into a name Albertans trust, all the while giving back to local and global communities. Built on long-standing client relationships, referrals, and staff who become family. We treat every building like it's our own, protecting your investment and creating spaces that are healthier and better to be in for tenants, staff, and visitors alike. That same care doesn't stop at the door. It's the care our leaders pour into the communities we serve. It begins with our people. IMPACT STORY
Janina Aniołczyk | Owner & President
Janina knows firsthand what war does to a family. Her grandparents survived Soviet deportation to Siberia during WWII and arrived in Canada with almost nothing but the resolve to start over. That history shapes how she leads today. Many MI-KA team members have lived a version of that same story. As immigrants and refugees who understand the hardship of building a new life in an unfamiliar country, a new language, a new climate, no family nearby to lean on.
In June 2025, the Canadian Polish Congress honoured her lifetime of this work with the Gold Award of Merit. She serves as President of the Polish Combatants' Association, Branch 18, and Chair of the Polish Canadian Cultural Centre, and wrote “They Worked Among Us” book to preserve that history.

Every June she hosts Polish Canadian Heritage Day, and in January 2026 welcomed more than 20 newcomers to a community dinner, extending the same welcome her own family once needed.
Why it matter for MI-KA: Starting over in a new country is hard; a new language, new systems, and no safety net close by. Janina's own family history means she understands that better than most, and it's why works to be a home away from home for immigrant and refugee staff, not just a paycheque. That support is the reason so many team members put down roots, build a career, and choose to stay with MI-KA for years, not months, which means the same trusted, familiar faces caring for your building year after year.

Michael Garszczal | Operations Manager
Michael leads MI-KA's operations with a simple, heartfelt belief: take care of people, and everything else follows. That belief starts at home. Michael has built out hands-on training, mentorship, and real paths for advancement, so every new employee, many of them newcomers to Canada themselves, has a genuine chance to grow into a lasting career, not just hold a job.
He's especially proud of the women on our team who have grown into supervisor and lead roles, given the same investment, opportunity, and trust as anyone else. For someone rebuilding a life in a new country, that kind of support, real training, patient mentorship, a manager who checks in rather than checks out, can be the difference between surviving and truly belonging.

Michael carries that same belief in people, dignity, and equality into MI-KA's ongoing partnership with Plan Canada, which champions girls' education and gender equality alongside vocational training that gives young people worldwide, especially young women, a genuine path into skilled, lasting work. It reflects what Michael has always believed: a company's success isn't only measured in the buildings it keeps spotless, but in the lives, and futures, it helps build along the way.

Maxine morrison | Strategic Growth Advisor
For 17 years, Maxine has volunteered with the Rotary Club of Calgary Downtown, not as a side project, but as a second calling. She has chaired major fundraising campaigns that have raised more than $10 million and served on the Stay in School, Communications, Programs and Major Donations committees and Rotary's Board of Directors.

But ask Maxine what she's proudest of, and she'll talk about her seven Stay in School students, mentored from grade 6 all the way to graduation. Some came from homes where poverty made hope feel like a luxury, and Maxine watched kids she cared about wrestle with real, heavy depression born from that hardship. Showing up week after week, listening without judgment, helping them believe they were capable of more than their circumstances suggested. When COVID-19 closed classrooms, she made sure her students and their families weren't left behind, helping secure the computers for everyone within the family and connectivity they needed so a lack of technology at home would never be the reason a child fell through the cracks. Every one of her seven students has gone on to post-secondary education, chasing futures their own parents never dared imagine possible.

Beyond her mentoring, Maxine also helps organize the community book sale supporting early childhood literacy and the BBQs and breakfasts that bring neighbours and communities in need together, while partnering with United Way's Community Hub. MI-KA is proud to build on supporting Rotary's local and global work to end polio, promote peace, build strong communities and expand access to clean water and healthcare.

Why it matter for MI-KA: Maxine's mentoring proves something MI-KA believes deeply: showing up for someone, patiently and without giving up on them, changes what's possible for their life. It's the same quiet persistence she brings to growing MI-KA's client relationships, and the same belief in people that MI-KA extends to every member of our own team.

MI-KA is, at its heart, a multicultural family. Twice a year, we close the workday early and open our doors to something bigger than business. A staff appreciation dinner, where crews and their families come together to celebrate the people who keep our buildings, and our company, running.
These dinners have become as much a celebration of that shared culture as they are a thank-you. It's part reunion, part homecoming, and entirely genuine. A reminder that the people who show up to care for your building deserve to feel cared for themselves.
